Dronfield Students Embark on the Adventure of a Lifetime in Peru
On 16 July 2026, twenty-nine students from Years 11 to 13 set off from Dronfield on an unforgettable month-long expedition to Peru.
The trip combined three weeks of volunteering with a rich cultural experience in the communities surrounding Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. Working alongside local tradespeople, students made a tangible difference to community projects, helping to repair playgrounds, build fences and kitchen facilities, improve roads, construct drainage systems for a toilet block, and dig trenches. They mixed concrete, painted walls, sanded wood, and even learned basic brick making skills.
A particularly memorable project saw students create a vibrant trilingual mural at a local school and teach English to younger children. Their enthusiasm, resilience and commitment did not go unnoticed, with the project leader praising the group for their exceptional work ethic and willingness to embrace every challenge.
Beyond the volunteering, students immersed themselves fully in Peruvian culture. They sampled traditional foods and drinks, including guinea pig, Inca Cola and chicha morada, a popular purple corn drink. They also took part in traditional dances and embraced every opportunity to practise their Spanish, whether chatting with local residents in camp or negotiating purchases in bustling local markets.
The highlight of the expedition was undoubtedly the visit to Machu Picchu. To reach this iconic wonder, the group completed a five-day trek along the spectacular Salkantay Trail, climbing to altitudes of 4,600 metres above sea level. Camping along the route, students were rewarded with breathtaking mountain scenery and unforgettable experiences, including local coffee and chocolate tastings. With mules carrying most of the expedition equipment, the group was able to fully appreciate the stunning landscape and the challenge of high-altitude trekking.
Peru is a country rich in history, culture and natural beauty. The students were privileged to experience the warmth and hospitality of the communities that welcomed them throughout their stay. As well as creating memories that will last a lifetime, they were able to make a meaningful contribution to local projects and leave a positive legacy in the communities they served.
The expedition was a remarkable adventure that challenged students, broadened their horizons and developed skills that will stay with them long after their return to Dronfield.
