Latest Successes – Geography Field Trip

Year 10 Geography students visited Hornsea, doing physical fieldwork on the Yorkshire Coastline.

They learnt how Hornsea lies upon boulder clay and how this impacts the area. Sea defences and coastal erosion were discussed. The groynes on Hornsea beach ensure wide beaches with the beach material being both sand and shingle. There are exposed boulder clay cliffs to the north and a seawall along the front of the town. The boulder clay cliffs are again exposed to the south of the town.

A stone and steel gabion and a concrete revetment have been erected to the southern end of Hornsea. Gabions absorb wave energy, protecting the boulder clay cliffs behind. Both the positive and negative impacts of the coastal management were looked at. This is valuable fieldwork as part of the Geograpghy GCSE. The students will also do human geography fieldwork aswell as this physical georaphy study.
